Dear Brothers and Sisters,

2020 has been a year full of trials and tribulations.  We have seen over and over that the “normal” way of conducting our business doesn’t work anymore.  We’ve also been learning new ways to do things, and as we learn how to apply the lessons we’ve learned, we’ve started to see that some of these new “normals” might actually work better than the old ways of doing things.

During the initial onset of COVID the world came to a stop for a little while, but the calendar didn’t.  Many of you were still required to find ways to satisfy the requirements laid out by the state to maintain your electrical licenses.  To that end, we were able to work with Cari Helberg to start offering an online Code Update class.  As we have continued to offer classes via this format, the overwhelming response to these classes has been very positive with a number of people saying they are done attending in-person classes moving forward.

There are a number of benefits with this format.  It represents a substantial cost savings to the JW fund when we aren’t worried about renting a space for the weekend to hold the class, and we aren’t paying for additional instructor expenses for travel and lodging.  Another nice feature is that the attendees don’t need to get up on a Saturday and Sunday and travel to wherever that particular class is being held that weekend.  You simply log into your email, click the link, and get taken directly into the online meeting room.  Another big advantage is that online classes are not going to be compromised by inclement weather.

With all of this in mind, and also taking into account that COVID-19 is something we are still dealing with, we are looking at doing Code Update classes a little differently for the upcoming year.  We are going to try scheduling at least one online code update class per month.  Anyone with internet access, a camera, and a microphone can sign up for these classes at any time, and whenever it is convenient for them to attend one.

In conjunction with this increase in online class availability, we are also looking at scaling back the number of in-person training sessions we offer.  At this time, we are looking at scheduling three total classes in Rochester at the Union Hall, and three total classes in Mankato at the Union Hall for 2021.  The classes would be spaced out throughout the year and rotate the in-person opportunities between the two venues and give all of our members an equal chance of having an in-person class occurring in their area.  We will also look at scheduling additional classes as they become necessary.

We realize that this is a lot different than things have looked in the past, and you will lose out on some of the fellowship with your brothers and sisters that you would run into at these events.  This system does give us some guarantees however that a scheduled class should happen when it’s scheduled to without unforeseen interruptions.  It will also allow everyone an option to receive the necessary training in a format that they are most comfortable with.

Please call me at (507) 529-7721 or email me at mbambrick@scmnjatc.org if you have any questions about how the classes are going to work, or if you would like to get signed up for one of our future classes.  I look forward to working with everyone on these classes in the future.

Sincerely,

Michael Bambrick, Jr.
